California Bill Aims to Allow Individuals to Make Government Payments in Cryptocurrency

On February 18, California Senator Sydney Kamlager introduced a bill that would allow individuals to use cryptocurrency to pay for government services if passed.

According to its text, Senate Bill No. 1275 would “authorize a state agency to accept cryptocurrency as a method of payment for the provision of government services.” It would add Section 11000.3 to the Government Code: “A state agency may accept cryptocurrency as a method of payment for the provision of government services.”

The California bill comes on the heels of several bills introduced by Arizona aimed to make Bitcoin legal tender in that state.
